In 1995 the market for supercars slowed and Bugatti filed for bankruptcy. At the end of the 1990’s Volkswagen bough the rights for the Bugatti name and brought back to life the Bugatti name. The Volkswagen Group presented the Bugatti EB 218 at the Geneva Motor Show in 1999. The EB 218 followed up on the previous EB 118, which was first shown at the Paris Motor Show in 1998. The EB 218 was produced by Giorgetto Giugiaro who was under contract from Volkswagen to first
produce the EB118 and then furthered the design when unveiling the 218 a year later in this distinct four door automobile.
The Volkswagen developed engine is a thing of beauty and power as it features three rows of 18 cylinder banks joined together to form a "W" shape. This engine with displacement of 6.3 liters is all power as it cranks out 547 horsepower, hits a top speed of 155 mph, and accelerates from 0-60 mph in only 4.5 seconds. The 218 features a direct injection engine that produces an output of 408 kW and maximum torque of 650 Newton meters.
The Bugatti EB 218 features permanent 4-wheel drive and aluminum multi link suspension that give the automobile superior drivability and traction.
